Spam ten millions with your offer :P (I'm just kidding)

Some other ways are :

1) Affiliate program (Make your own program if you sell something)
2) Join toplists
3) Digg (if you have some content that is usefull there

You can also give out a free wallpaper or screensaver which has a link to your site. The wallpaper/screensaver can be distributed via various free download sites. This has been quite sucessful for some sites.

If you have an utility script, that can also be given away free through sites like hotscripts etc. That should generate a decent amount of traffic.

Yes, offline advertising of websites can work surprisingly well. I have used very basic flyers to advertise some local affiliate programs. The clicks just trickle in over a long period. However, the quality of the traffic is much higher than the traditional online methods.

I think that this is because they take the flyer to the computer, type in the URL because they are genuinely interested and give it their full attention. But if they click on a link or an ad while surfing, they look for just a short while. They've probably seen 20 sites in the last hour, and will surf another 20 in the following hour.

No I wouldn't post that to digg. Digg's visitors is a tech savy audience so unless you have a killer tech story do not submit it there because they may even ban your site from their service.

Nikolas
Fri 14 November 2008, 12:36 pm GMT +0100
Link bait is - in simple words - the techique of writing an article that people will love to refer to. It should probably be a resource list or in general an article that defines what it is refer to.

Now about article marketing I don't think it works the way it used to before a few years because of the duplicate content. But if you write a unique article and post it as a guest blogger to another blog or a big site about your niche can help.

So what about things like posting some of your content on a bit torrent server and the like?
What about paying a little money to cheap workers in philipines to move your links around, etc?
I mean, there's a lot of stuff to be done...and I'm no expert nor have done some of the things because I still don't have the content I want to sell, but the time will come.

About link baiting, it all boils down to having great content doesn't it?

Yeah, that's it. Cheap workers can't do what great content can. For instance you can hire someone to submit your site to thousands of directories. First of all you don't know where they will submit your site, and this alone can cause penalties (FFA, etc)

On the other hand a good link bait can give you fresh links every day for months

To promote the website both are necessary On-Page Optimizationas well Off-Page Optimization.
First you have to do On-Page Optimization, including
meta tags
keywords
title tags
alt attributes
h1/h2 tags
description tags

Next is Off-Page Optimization. It deals with building links. Here are some of the techniques of doing Off-Page Optimization:
- article submissions
- blog commenting
- classified ads
- directory submissions
- forum posting
- link exchange
- press release
- online groups
- social media and networking
- social bookmarking

Hi, matthemattrix.

I would imagine this would work. Having heard of the term 'banner blindness,' I think the phenomenon of skipping, skimming, scanning as one views (not necessarily reads) textual content on websites is bound to extend to one's responsiveness to ads. If we've trained ourselves to ignore banner ads, then textual ads would probably suffer the same avoidance from us. However, your the-hard-way style of site promotion is intriguing. People read slower on the web as opposed to print, so if they actually finish reading the flyer (I do hope it's concisely written) they might just hop on that url provided.

Christopher
Mon 23 November 2009, 09:12 pm GMT +0100
I prefer the one-way links provided by taking part in blog/forum comments, and those in the author boxes of articles sent to article directories. They work.

Marcus Chadley
Tue 24 November 2009, 08:10 pm GMT +0100
The good thing about the links left in articles published by article directories is that the article may have nothing to do with the site being promoted. All that matters is for the link to appear in as many places online as they can.

Marcus Chadley
Tue 24 November 2009, 08:55 pm GMT +0100
I prefer generating back links myself, or as assigned to a writer, since I would like comments that read like a human being who read the thread actually wrote them.

This offline marketing strategy is intriguing, to say the least. But then you'd have to design your flyer quite well to do this. Maybe it has to be jobbed out?

Article submission is still very useful, especially if the submitted news and posts contain some hot issues and getting reprinted across the net by admins of other blogs and webmasters who are looking for similar discussions plus in-depth analysis of the points.

There is also one other way of adding contents to the websites directly and that is using blogs and forgetting about submissions. If you add contents to your blog regularly, after some time some free and one way links could be gained from other sources.

Hello
I think these are 10ways to promote your website

1 Hone your search engine submission processso you can get the best exposure possible.

2 If you're still itching for more exposure, you can explore search engine marketing, wherein you pay to have a text ad appear when visitors search for certain keywords.

3 Launch a sweepstakesthat offers anyone who registers on your site or subscribes to e-newsletters within a certain time frame the chance to win a free gift.

4 Send out a weekly e-mail newsletterto registered site members that offers tips and news related to your company or industry with links back to your site.

5 Offer free contentto other sites. It's a win-win situation: The other site gets free articles to beef up their offerings and you get a link back to your site and the cachet of being an expert.

6 Send a well-planned, customer-focused e-mail promotionto a targeted list of potential visitors and offer a credit toward the purchase of anything from your site. Spend time on your e-mail's look and content: You want to offer value to customers and not have it appear to be spam.

7  Create your own link exchangeby asking sites complementary to yours (but that don't compete) to put your link on their pages and you'll do likewise.

8 Hook up with webaffiliates--hundreds of sites that all link their traffic to yours--and get visitors from sites with related content.

9 Get active in online discussion groups and chats and always include your URL in your signature. (Don't do any hard selling, though. Most groups frown on such behavior and will think you're spamming the group.)

10 Any time someone orders a product from your site, include a catalog with their order to get them coming back for more.

IMO, promotion that hauls in traffic and revenues must be tailored to go beyond itself. If website owners and business owners will see the necessity in going for targeted traffic, then they will absolutely be spared from the expense of time, effort and money. Effective viral marketing of any product will only be as effective once all efforts are laid-out in the tables of people who are interested on what is being offered. ?

All the techniques mentioned so far are ONline marketing.

Don't forget OFFline marketing.
Many companies that are selling a product (instead of a website for AdSense income) are quite happy doing offline marketing: business cards, pens, highlighters, coffee mugs, paper ads, baseball caps, etc. The website is just a means to an end.

Even if you are promoting a website for its own sake (for AdSense revenue), some of these techniques work fine too.
For example, having proper business cards printed makes you look a lot more professional than scribbling your website URL down on a scrap piece of paper every time you meet somebody in person and want to let them know about your site.

Another example: if your site is relevant to students, get some bookmarks printed. Then hand them out around a local school, in the library, or just insert them in many library books.

Or photocopy many small paper ads that you can post around a school or neighborhood.

Or get some inexpensive pens made and hand them out. Then every time somebody uses the pen, which has your URL on it, your site stays in sight--and in mind.

There is no doubt that these methods or ways are very important and effective for website promotion and advertising, but i think when we start use these methods we neglect quality and therefor we get less results.
