Definitely, its navigated by Google crawler.

Error 404 means that the page does not exist. One of your page which is optimized become error 404, it will create a adverse effect on your optimization and your search engine rankings.

Visitor will avoid to come to the page if it is directed to 404 error page. It is better to redirect 404 error page to home page or any other page.

It can't be denied that there will be bad user experience if we don't redirect the page.
However,there will be two duplicate URLs with same content if we rediect the ERROR page.
In this way,our site will not get the TrustRank.
Also,google will think lowly of the quality of your content.
