Here is an idea for free offline promotion.
Put a big sticker in your car with your url, best with a color that will attract the eye (eg. orange), and park it on a high traffic road.
I think this could work. What's your opinion?

It's possible that it could work - especially if your URL is catchy and short. This technique is especially beneficial if your website is meant for a local audience :) It may work for general-audience websites as well, especially if it's an entertainment/humor site :)

This is an odd form of advertising, but you could leave flyers around in coffee shops with free wifi.

I hope posting my own link is not disallowed here. But this is something I would like to share. My friend who has built a large tupperware business using offline promotion techniques wrote an article for my site which I am sure you will be interested in

I think that a lot of those ideas wouldn't work for a wine website ;o)
I have been meaning to get my url on the back of my car for ages!

Propably you should try spreading flyers to quallity restaurants, or park your car (with the url on it) on a place like that :)

I agree. You can many of the things suggested, provided you choose carefully the places where you spread the word.

I have a nice big advertisement on my cars windshield.
The only reason it sucks is because I cant check my views to conversions ratio.

The only way to check this is by promoting this way a new site, and wait a little before you promote it with other ways.
I know that this is impossible, but I would love to find someone that did it.

Make me the right offer and you can have your very own WebDigity.com banner on my car ;)
I live in Long Beach, CA and I drive to Los Angeles almost every day, so you know its gonna be visible!

Some more ways:
Go to office depot and get a stamp for $20 that has your URL and a brief description. Pickup a 1000 pack of bright colored notes. Get to postin and stickin.

I used to advertise my friend's local/online Tshirt shop this way... He asked me if he could put a "banner" on my second car.

I did something similar with an auto parts company. We had stickers on our cars and believe it or not quite a few people ended up visiting the site.

I actually took this idea a step farther. I got a cheap scrolling LED sign on Ebay and put in the back window of my car with the URL of my humor site
http://www.wontonway.com scrolling in different colors. Stickers are good, but something that eye catching is even better, plus it works very well at night. Also, it's dynamic, so you can change the message if you're having a promotion or something.

Yes, well if you check out the site, you'll come to realize that in terms of reckless and idiotic things we've done, driving around with a scrolling sign ranks pretty low ;) :)

Btw did you have any measured results from this? I mean did you saw any increase to your type in traffic when you added this led sign?

That's a good idea, especially if your website's target audience is of interest to the local community.
For those people who are concerned about painting their car or marking it up in any way, here's the approach I would take: get one or two of those translucent plastic banners made that statically cling to the rear window of your car. I have one of those myself; it says "University of Toronto". Get something like that made. When you are in stop-and-go traffic to and from work, who knows who might see it. Or when the car is parked in the shopping centre parking lot, the university parking lot, etc.

don't you have to pay signage fee on anything that you advertise on your vehicle?
