How effective does blog commenting and forum posting to increase the SERP's?

I think that both of them are not so good for SEO because even when they are dofollow they don't appear in relevant content, but as a separate piece of text (signature or the name field in a blog post)

Of course having a few links like that wont harm as it will help your site's crawlability.

They are not the end all be all of SEO but the backlinks from related sites do help a website in the search engines.

comments and forum posts are very helpful for the site owner, please keep posting fresh content :)

It increases both your PR and traffic.
Be sure  to post comments on blogs that are relevant to your site.

I have seen relevant and thoughtful comments bring in targetted traffic which as far as I'm concerned is far more important that chasing PR and search engine rankings.

A signature on an active forum, which is fairly regularly indexed is also a great way to get a site indexed quickly.

With my own blog, if a comment is particularly interesting, I might add an update to the entry itself (with a do-follow link) or even create a second post, also potentially with an in-context do-follow link.

i think both ways can help you in getting traffic and increase PR.  Quality blog commenting especially helps to build the reputation and of course traffic. 

Need to make sure you keep it in perspective. Blog and forums should only be a small piece of your overall strategy for marketing your business. If you think about your marketing as a big piece of pie, forum and blog posting really should only take up about one bite.

But yes, there is some benefit.

And because forums don't have no follow in their user?s generated content very often.-if you start a thread yourself, you can control the title and much of the content of the page your link will sit on, thus ensuring relevancy in the eyes of the search engine.

They are useful,do follow links could make your site have a high pr,and it will show your site at the top of search engines,but i think only your site have enough usefull content,it is the best.

i agree to your comments.. but i have one question though. does anyone experienced any drop in backlinks although you've done comments to related sites?

Commenting on do follow blogs will be loved by the search engines and raise your rankings. Make sure that your links are relevant to specific threads and do not spam the blogs.

Forums are the good platform for discussion,you can get a lot ideas through forums, not only ideas but also solutions of certain problems.It generates traffic to your website, helps to promote your business and helps to increase rankings.

its really helpful in SERP but not more if you have google PR backlink and site PR so you can get google SERP compare to Blog Commenting and forum posting

As stated before, signatures and blog commenting do not succeed as separate entities, but as a part of a greater plan or strategy.

Both generate traffic for your website. Forum commenting is very good way to drive more and more traffic for your website.

I guess blog commenting is much better from increasing SERPS.. plus dofollow prefer must in blog commenting..

Well Both are very important if you do relevant link building in these both things.

Since they would provide some one way links so they could be useful. One thing which is very important is that since the niches are getting hotter day by day so more and more quality links are going to be needed.

I prefer both as both are really important in building high pr by driving more and more traffic on you sites.But the important thing is the quality of blog or forum and the kind of your response  since if you are doing it in a blog or forum where there is less traffic then there will less chance that your comment or post will be properly observed.

Yes I really agree with this. These both Blog commenting and Forum Posting are the best tips and techniques of SEO.

Both commenting and forum are important to get in order to get much of back links. In forum at certain level you are allowed to submit signature so I think forum submission is safe and relevant.

Till date best that worked for me is forum posting since it helps to create quality backlinks, i have heard about blog commenting also works well, but have not tried yet.
