Building a Forum - Time for Moderators!?

Hi All,

I'm about to appoint one moderator (i feel that @ 100 members it's a worthy milestone) to assist with the general running of the site, i have the great luxury of this member offering to become a moderator and as a positive active member they were always at the top of the list of candidates.

Just wondering if anyone has some suggestions on the roles, responsibilities and expectations that i should place on moderators?

I agree, 100 members is a milestone to get a moderator.

First of all I suggest to ask this from people that are interesting your community, and see it the way you do. I mean that even that someone is very good in the moderating thing (perhaps he/she runs a forum also) that doesn't really mean something.

The most important (at least for me) is to have a team of people who like the community, that are loyal to it, and really want to help.

About the roles, responsibilities and expectations I can't really say much. Personally I see the moderator thing as :

1) A recognition to the people that help with the community

2) A good way to help the community. I mean I can sleep better at night when I know that someone else can delete a spam message :)

But I can't really expect much from these people, as this is like a volunteer job. You can't expect something from your team, and you can't tell them what to do. The only thing that you want from them is to act as they should, so that the community will keep the feel that has (little general I know, but I can't really express what I mean in English right now :) )

Maybe you should also read what Lee sais about that, who is a very respectfull forum owner ;)

You communicated your point clearly and i can appreciate and agree with it.

I'll check out that link on Forum Fix... i've only recently discovered Lee's site and haven't had the chance to dig deep.

Moderators are important to a forum, they will keep the forum safe and clean, as long as they follow the rules too. Plus, moderator's help make the forum more active =)
