I'm now throwing myself into the study on SEO.

I know it may sounds stupid, but I want to find out the detailed differences between SEO and SEM.

Anyone could help me in this question?
Thanks in advance! :)

SEO is actually one element of SEM. Search Engine Optimization is the process of optimizing your website with the appropriate keywords in a manner that will make it easily "seen" by search engines.

Search Engine Marketing is the process and the methods used to promote your site to search engines. The most common tools are:

1. Search Engine Optimization
2. Article Marketing
3. Social Network Marketing
4. PPC, or Pay Per Click Advertising

SEO is the process of gaining traffic from ???free???, ???organic??? or ???natural??? listings on search engines.
SEM is a broader concept. It is the process of gaining traffic from both ???free??? (SEO) and ???paid??? (PPC, CPC etc) efforts.

search engine optimization intends to perk up not only your website's visibility, but as well as your on-site rate conversions.

SEO refers to the process of using on and off page factors (typically free) to get your web pages ranked for your chosen keywords in order to get more search engine traffic to your sites. SEM takes it a step farther to include using paid search engine listings and paid inclusion to get more traffic to your websites.

SEO is the act of optimising the HTML and other content of your website for relevant, targeted key phrases in order to attain higher natural listings than competing websites. SEO provides a cheaper long term solution for increased qualified traffic and generates customer inquiries that ultimately convert to sales.

Now SEM is broader than SEO. It includes SEO and other areas to improve a sites visibility in search engine results pages, like paid listings and paid inclusions.

You can think of SEM as more expensive and quite possibly more targeted, while SEO is free (not counting your time of course) and its purpose is to obtain better free search listings.

SEO is a process of adjusting both on-site and off-site elements that are known to impact the search engine???s ranking algorithms. The ranking algorithms give the search engines the ability to evaluate websites for their relevancy to a user search query. Now, there are some 200 ??? 300 different factors that make up the ranking algoirthms and no one individual knows them all. However, experienced SEO professionals will have a solid understand of the key ranking factors and what will positively impact them.

SEM, which people often interchange with the PPC (pay-per-click) acronym or often referred to as Paid Search, is the method of utilizing a search engine advertising program to get ads for your website included in the SERP for keyphrases in the Sponsored Link/Listings area. These ads are specifically controlled by you (or an account manager) to say exactly what you want.

Many people misunderstand the goal of search engine optimization as distinct from search engine marketing. Applying SEM expectations to SEO can lead to significant frustration and disappointment.

This month's newsletter will address the distinction between search engine marketing and search engine optimization. We've written a lot about SEO in the past so this month we'll focus on search engine marketing. The goal is to clarify proper expectations for SEM compared to SEO so that you can engage in the most appropriate approach with the best possible results.

The most common request we hear when discussing search engine services is, "We want our website in the top ten of the search engines when people type in the phrase ______." This goal is flawed and full of unrealistic expectations. Sadly, there are plenty of companies that are willing to take your money in response to such a demand. In some rare cases they might be able to fulfill this request, but often by using unethical and inappropriate methods and tricks that - if they do work - only work for a season and often at the cost of hurting a site in the long run.

Not only is the expectation to get a particular site in a particular position for a particular phrase flawed, but it also tends to obscure other benefits to search engine traffic. Getting expectations in line with what can reasonably be accomplished keeps companies from wasting time and money while avoiding frustration that can come from a flawed search engine strategy.

I see SEM as a rather broad term. It's everything that can be done to utilize the technology of search engines with the goal of promoting a web site and increasing its traffic, its "stickiness," and, in the case of sites that promote a business (or are a business), increase profits. SEO, therefore, would be a subset of SEM.

I have had many ask me what the difference between Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is, so I thought I might throw a couple of definitions out there.

I am going to start with SEO, as it is a part of SEM.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization consists of two techniques: On-page and Off-page optimization. It is slow and free technique to gain traffic and rankings.
Search engine marketing is a paid technique to place website in search engine result pages and gain traffic.
