That really depends on the purpose that you want the domain. For me there are two strategies :

1) Keywords
This strategy is used only if the site is not something really special, and you don't want this domain to be a brand name or something. In this case you can buy your keywords on any tld that is available

2) Branding domains
An example of this is this site. Webdigity does not means something, but that's the reason that people will remember a place like this(I mean they will remember it as a name). This is a better strategy for this reason, but it will work only with specific tlds. .Com is the best one, but if your site is for Holland's audience, the .nl tld would be by far better.

These are some good ideas, I'm happy that some of the names are still available for .nl. Doing it this way I registered last weeks linktrading and easythumbs (and my last name ;)). The branding thing is really a good one...

The branding thing is really a good one...

I think it is the most important thing for new sites.

Take this for example. How many webmaster forums exist right now? I think there are maybe more than 200.

So let's say that you gone to webmasterforum. something, and you like the place. Is this easy to remember? I guess it is, but you wont remember the tld as well. So if you want to come back to this site, you will have to check all the webmasterforum. something tlds untill you find it.

A domain that aquired for branding will be more easy to learn, as it is something unique. A new word that you don't know, but that's also the reason that you will mention it. And of course is something that users will like as a custom template or logo. I think branding domains are the best way to move in our days.

And also I see that my branding domain sites have more type in traffic. That proves that people learn those domains.

I think over here in the US, if the website is for a company; most just assume it is a .com. I would argue that anyone seeking a US audience for a business site should use always use a dot com and get .info, .org, .net and maybe .us to protect the brand.

The one notable exception being del.icio.us. But, I wonder how many add the .com on the end anyway.

I think it's interesting that Webdigity doesn't have some kind of meaning. I always think of an old song, think it was by Dean Martin? and later used to sell hot dogs...Hot Digity, dog digity ooh what you do to me....

Nikolas
Wed 5 April 2006, 11:37 pm GMT +0300
LoL. I didn't knew that song, maybe I should find it and cover it with a little different lyrics :P

About the delicious site, I think you are in my words. Because delicious means nothing in relevance with what the site is about. It is a brand name.

And if you check all of those "Web 2.0" sites have domains like that.

Most of the tlds have no value, but there are allways some cool implementations that can make worth.

For example do you remember the welcome.to hosting service?

Being Australian, I wish they would free up .com.au. There was a very short debate about it a couple months ago. Right now unless your a registered company, you cant have the top level australian domain...its b.s

Anyone signed up for a new .mobi for websites targetting mobile phone users. Theres a push on for these atm.

Mon 28 August 2006, 12:59 am GMT +0300
Ya heres the details. As an individual citizen you cant buy the standard .com.au domain space unless you have an abn. Which means you have to register as a sole proprietor of a business or better (proper company etc )

http://www.auda.org.au/domains/au-domains/ Visit through proxy

There was a short debate, but I notice they didnt publicise it at all about opening it up for "domain monetiziation".

I could buy a .id.au, but who on earth knows about that extension? Its pointless. Theres no such thing as buying a strictly .au, such as there is for www.domain.us Visit through proxy or www.domain.be Visit through proxy.

yeah, I think that most people here earn the same amount, but the costs for a .nl domain is less then 10euro. I have customers with hundreds of .nl domain names, don't wanna think about this rates...

anyway, if my residence was iceland I would register only .com domain names (for $7 at godaddy.com)

Was wondering if Webdigity or Nick could purchase domain names in bulk via Godaddy and then transfer them to Webdigity users via their Godaddy account.  Purchasing power of many would benefit us all for the reduced price of registering in bulk.  Just a thought.  - Graham

That's a very nice idea, and I really admire your community spirit Graham :)

But I am afraid that it is too soon for something like that as you need a really big quantity in order to get better prices, but this will be on the to do list for the future. I guess in some time we will be able to do something like that or maybe force a company to give us better prices (of course this would be possible if we had more members but we are working on that too :) ).

I will talk later or tomorrow with someone from Goddady to see what we can do.

I've checked their reseller plan and I think this would not be vital for less than 200 registrations per year. Actually that number would be only to cover costs with a price around $8,5 per domain. I don't think that this is what we are looking for.
