So .. let's see how we are doing in web design. How would you rate your design skills?

- beginner
- medium
- advanced

.. with all the lack of modesty I am capable of I would rate myself as advanced since I kinda did everything in this. I am a freelance designer and also work at a firm where I take care of the same things ...

How are you?

I'd say medium, although I hope to get to advance soon. In the web dev. sector such as programming, probably beginner as I don't know much coding but I plan to get a good grasp of it soon as I'd like to start making scripts or at least modify the ones I use to better suit my needs.

I should mention that the psychology of your rate works both ways ? know your client! If you have a large and established client, a small rate will leave them thinking you are inexperienced and unprofessional. Most larger corporations want to pay over $100.00/hour ? it isn?t that they want to pay that, it is that they want to hire the designer demanding that. Larger clients know more than anyone that you get what you pay for, and they are willing and have the resources to do so.

Your rate is a personal thing ? don?t take my or anyone else?s advice right on. You have to work out your rate for yourself. This post and others should be used as a reference point! Figure your rate out through trial and error ? you may take some projects at less than you are worth and you may lose some gigs because you went to high; but that is the nature of figuring out this all important number!

Our scale is very simple. Whose designs are approved by the clients in first shot.

its a hard question becasue there is more to website design than just pretty designs. I would say at SEO i am intermediate, at design looks i am pretty decent to good .. i know that isnt in the list but i am comparing my design looks to others that i see and in the design in general department i would say i am well obve average.

I rather say I'm a beginner in this field. Just starting to learn designing. I think its not on how you're good at. It's how the client appreciate your design.

You can always outsource in regards to your own business.  In regards to creating design work for clientele I believe the most important fact is not exactly how good you are; because everything can be learned in a matter of time, but how flexible you can be in your creativity to develop new and different ideas on an ongoing basis.

Newbie certainly i did not. But there are so many things to learn.
However, I know well that copy. So I do not have to invent hot water...
Let's say that I am someone who uses a good experience of other developer...
That means the midium level.

This is kind of subjective.  @ brandmantra... how picky are your clients?  Also, maybe you are skilled, but you have clients that are terrible at conveying to you what they want.

If you are designing professionally, should there also be a criteria where you deliver the site to your client's needs?  I think that understanding the needs in specifics should be on top along with your ability to be creative.

I'm def a beginner and finding it a steep learning curve but hey starting to move up the google rankings and have managed to gain a page ranking on a couple of pages. I try to gain feed back as often as I can and build it into the website to improve it.
