Hi,
I need to enter a port number (somwhere between 8000 and 8999) to enter the config menu to my modem/router
I did the setup by myself and and forgot the number is there a free tool to check which ports are active or available?
just tried "active ports" but this tool is telling me only what ports are active at the moment. I need to check which local port will answer.

Hmm, you know me, I am a php guy.
You can try to create a php script for this job with the exec command :)

That's true, but it would be fun if you had some free time :)
I think what you are looking for is a port scanner utillity, but I can't remember a good one.

There's some free portscan apps listed
hereWith a portscan app you can enter an IP address and it will try every port number for you and end up with a report on which ports are open. Almost all ISP's have a policy against portscanning, but on your own LAN its no problem...

Maybe you are in different subnets (I mean the subnet that the modem is using and the subnet of your pc)

that's a good one, the pc in in the subnet of a another router, how to do that checking in a different subnet, maybe I should connect the pc directly with the other modem/router
thanks I will let you know about, later...

The router should take care of the routing between the 2 subnets. If you can ping the modem you should be able to portscan it as well (as long as there is no firewall inbetween to prefent this) still the best thing to do is just a direct connection from your pc to the modem, disable your firewall and scan away!

With an app you can scan an IP address and he will attempt to resolve port number for you and again with a report on the open ports. Almost all ISPs have a policy against portscanning, but on your own local network not be a problem ... ???
