Not really different than doing seo on an html page.
Some key factors are :
1) Incoming links from pages that are related to the keywords
2) alt attribute with the right keywords when the image is displayed
3) The filename of the image should also have some keywords

I believe it depends on the site, but in general I don't think you can maximize your sales from image search traffic :)

Keep in mind too that a huge percentage of the people using image search are actually looking for pictures to use for their own websites and projects.
If however, you have a topic that has somewhat poor results in the regular search area, image searches do sometimes bring in a nice bit of traffic. I see that with my own sites.

for me, there really is a great possibility to rank your image in a certain keyword if you use this keyword in file name and alt tag inside the image tag. here's the example: <img src="image-url-with-keyword-as-a-file-name" alt="keyword">.

It's a pretty minor element, but if it helps, it helps. Probably much more helpful for onsite optimization of longer tail phrases that are less competitive.

Don't forget to give the image an alt tag, otherwise google won't index it!

We do some pretty extensive photo album uploading for our small buisness SEO clients. It is working out well for us.
My boss teaches that if you want something from Google, use Google's picasaweb.

Stuffing the alt and image names with your keywords can contribute to traffic, but not apocalyptic traffic. Most people who search for images are looking to use them for their own sites. A portion of that may want to look into articles with good visuals.

If we use any images or picture we will have to use Alt attributes.Eventhough it is better to reduce the use of pictures. It is specified using the HTML alt tag. Search engine s save the value of image ALT attributes when they index pages.ALT attributes are very important in SEO.

It defines image descriptions within a website. You can attach text to an image to describe it so that Search Engines can also find it. ALT descriptions help you rank higher in search engines.

Yes, but the image should be related to that keyword and keyword should be related to the content of the page where image is to be placed.
