Hi Everyone,
I am currently working on some heavy load .psd's and it seems that my computer can't keep up anymore. I have a imac 2.4 GHz Intel with 1 gig of ram. Should I add more RAM or get a faster CPU ? What would you recommend ?

Thank you in advanced for your answers,

Gabriel

Hi Gabriel

I think more RAM will solve the problem. As far as I know Photoshop is one of the most memory eating applications

you need to restart your system more often ;)

but add some RAM and you're fine for the big images

Get more ram, if possible get a quad core CPU as well... and it wouldn't hurt to get a powerful VC...

You might also want to upgrade your graphics card.

I went all out and purchased 2 identical graphics workstations:  One for my local office in Virginia, the other for the office in New York.  I cannot stress this point enough:  The specs for such a computer should be mind-boggling if you're serious about any sort of graphic design.  If you question yourself as to "Is this too much for what I'm doing?"  The answer to that is a flat out NO because at the rate that computer technology has increased between the early '90s and today, you can bet the clothes on your back that within a period of 18 months, components considered "mid-range" will be beneath 'entry level".

With that in mind, here was what I bought (Bought components separately, then put it together on my dining room table since it's the only one big enough to spread everything out).  Mind you, I was looking at a minimum of 3 years of use, so I went all out.

Case - Antec Sonata Plus 550
Power Supply - Thermaltake Toughpower 1000W
Motherboard - MSI K9N2 Diamond AM2+ (Got this because it had was the most stable one I read up on...yes, even better than the Asus Crosshairs II)
CPU - AMD Phenom 9350e Agena 2.5GHz
Video Card - ATI FireGL V8650 100-505509 (I put this in slot 2 on the MSI board and shut off internal NVidia card off for this to work 100%)
Memory - Mushkin 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240 pin 1066
Hard Drive1. Western Digital VelociRaptor (2 x 300GB) in Raid 1
                        2. Western Digital My Book (Mirror Edition) 2TB (for backup)
