New to web design - all help appreciated!

Ive recently been asked by my work to revamp the company website - however I have no idea where to start.

Would anyone be able to give me a few good starting tips? For example books to read, useful websites and what software to use?

Check your competitors site so you could have an idea. :) That will definitely help you.

First tell me what back end you are using. Without knowing the languages and database that you will be using, no one can help you what to start with.
