Nubi - mostly focusing on WP theme alterations

I'm learning CSS and trying to get into custim web design/development; for now I'm taking WP themes and altering them. I'd like to be able to completely change the layout of the themes, so I'm thinking I should learn PHP...any thoughts? What would you recommend I focus my studies on?
