A lot of people ask what the PR (pagerank) is and how does it help their site.
I will try to answer to some common questions about pagerank here:
- What is the pagerank?
Well pr is a system created by Google to rank pages on the internet. Some official information on this can be found here.- What is the best pagerank value for a web page?
Pagerank can be anything from 0 to 10 and the biggest it is, the best for your site it is.- How is pagerank populated?
Well pagerank is about incoming links. This means that in order to get a high pr number you must have a lot of incoming links to your site.- Why page site.com/index.php has pr 2 and site.com/index.php?id=1 has 0?
Because each URL is a different page for Google. Even www.site.com/index.php would be different from the others mentioned above.- How often Google updates its pagerank database?
This update process take place every three months- How can I check what pagerank number my site has?
You can use the Pagerank monitor in order to see what pagerank your site has, or even get a graphic with this value on it.

So pretty much to get it up get more incoming links? I always thought taht adding to a directory was pointless because they are so large and my site will be near the bottom. But I guess web crawlers/spiders will find them still.

Yes I think the main reason to submit to web directories is to help with SEO, it is usually pretty rare that you will get visitors from the web directories you submit to.

Directories do not give you a significant ammount of traffic, but it is like a residual traffic. My directory gets about 100 - 150 visitors per month from directories, and even it is not much, it will keep going forever. So it is good to submit to directories besides the SEO.

So i should have other sites of similar content to point mine to get a good page rank, or should i also submit every page alone to google..?
I have submitted to many search engines and directories... Inserted meta tags Into my code...

Yes, that's the concept. But submitting every page to google is no good at all.

I agree. Actually even submit one page to google is useless.
Check this thread.
About directory submitions, I think it's the best to do. I submit my sites to new directories almost every day, and the results are very good (not as good from other link sources, but still they count)

No. There is no connection between pagerank and adsense income.

Yes but the most of directories request you to link them back. This way your PR isn't raised because the 3 way linking doesn't happen. (This is something i read in another topic here... correct me if i am wrong)

yes you're right, but if you submit your site to new directories they are most of the time free...
Edit: Or just have enough time to wait ;)

If i understand well, submiting your url to directorys that request link back does not help you with PR. Only for some visitors.
Is that right?

This is what I say a new directory needs fresh links they can't wait for reprocial links (only).
often its possible to suggest 3 way link trades to just try it...

Suggesting a 3 way link exchange is allways good for both parties. I accept 3 way links in the topsites directory for that reason. On the other hand reciprocal links help especcially for directories that have a lot of traffic. Those directories are not so many, but of course they deserve a link back for some extra traffic :)

Is there a list of high traffic directories?
Nikolas
Fri 23 June 2006, 11:45 am GMT +0200
That depends with the niche. In most cases niche directories that are also portals of some kind can send you some traffic.
A general directory that can send you some traffic is mine, as all of the links are indexed by google and some times get many traffic. For instance we had a site that got 700 uniques per month from topsites alone.

that will say people are searching for information and getting one of your pages in the search engine results?

yes this way its much easier, but then you need 2 sites because otherwise your site is full of unrelated links...

because otherwise your site is full of unrelated links
I don't think that this is happening with directory submissions. At least not when you are submitting in the right category.

First I had this month 43 visitors so far. Second I get 1 Main Link + 3 Other Link Urls; Deep Linking Allowed; And that only for one time fee (not yearly)!
Any further questions Olaf?

I am fully aware about that story. But they fixed that issue and they recovered. I am not willing to promote them here. I just mentioned, since I get the most tarffic from over a 1000 web directories I have submitted my site. Thats all Olaf. And yes, I have an offer for a one time fee and not annual charges.

PR can also be "N/A". It's worse than 0

that's right, even if all the pages are in the same domain, google considered it as different to each other. that's why the pr of your site's index is different from the other pages of your site. so if you want all the pages of your site have pr, you must link build each page.

Page Rank is just a general indicator of website popularity and is not a real-time measure. The PR you see may not be the PR of the site today, it could be weeks or months old. So, don't fret over the PR number.
