Both are the good ways in point of SEO. But for the discussion posting a thread matters more.

I agree with Shania, if you want to share something on the posted thread made by other members, it's Ok. But if you want to make another topic then, you're free to do so. :)

I'll prefer posting a new thread when I have queries and found out some information that I can share with others. But most of the time, I'm posting to some existing threads.
