SEO as your Career : Really Worth?

I found this very interesting about "SEO as a career". Is it really worth with SEO as career that can make money with SEO services. How important is seo as career to someone that use it to make money online...

hmm....if you're really expert in SEO, I think it's good. Many SEO experts make their money from selling SEO technique.

If you have the caliber and talent than every job and every field is good for you. To get the success in any field you should be passionate about that. Many CEOs are example of it like Steve Job or Bill gates.

It is a good niche to get into if one continuously looks up new innovations, stays in cooperative-mode w/ people in the business (rather than being selfish and not helping out others who may have a question here or there about general practices within SEO), and keeps their eye on the prize:  Servicing the client 'til their goals are met with a smile.  If one doesn't have the knowledge, skills, or surrounds him/herself with those who do have this specific knowledge to be successful in the field, then I would say it's not good.  The rate that SEO has grown in society is more necessity to gain presence on online searches rather than something experimental on the side.  Eventually, everyone will have some knowledge on SEO to set up his/her site.  When that day comes, then fantastic!  I welcome it because it will weed out those outfits who rely on quick fixes (band-aids) to aid in a company's rankings in lieu of those who have put in genuine efforts using strictly white-hat techniques to slowly rise to the levels that will please the specific client. 

I make SEO only as necessity during crisis

I know many folks who had a steady job and started with SEO in their spare time. Some found success and went on to create network of websites for themselves. Their was a phase when they provided SEO services to others, but once you get 'really' good at it, you don't want to share the pie with others and just do SEO for your own sites.

You are right! SEO is a start of career

If you are really good, you can surely consider it as a career option. But the fact it is dependent on various search engine algorithms makes it risky.

seo as career is pretty much learning career because you cannot be a master in seo you just can do your practical expertise with seo, i think seo as career is very worthy.

You are right, this career depends on Google and Yahoo. They can change algorithm or they can be a bankrupt.

If you're continually following research and remaining current on best practices and techniques, then I think it's a very valuable position to hold.  The problem with most companies is that they cannot realistically staff & pay a team devoted to this type of task, so hiring a company that devotes its time and efforts to SEO is often a very helpful resource.

i think SEO is a good career but not a long term career . until u have enery u can do it. in SEO the managerial stage never comes. if u ll lead u ll open ur success secrets ot others as well.  in current snario SEO is growing and earning good as profession .

SEO has been a career since almost the beginning of the Web, and many of us enjoy what we do. It is a challenge and a joy to be able to see a client's website showing up under their specific keywords high in the search engine rankings.

SEO experts get higher salary. But I dont want it as my career. I like to do online business.

Problem is lots of those SEO guys are scammers

IMO, it is not about if it worth or not, it is about if u are interestd in it or not. If u are really passionate about the thing, u won't care if it worth it or not, i guess.

but from my point of view, its really worth for me, the time i entered to this profession i feeling much secure profession wise.

If u are interested in it and have passion about it, u can feel the achieveness.

The thing here is not if it is okay to work as a caree, but if u are interested in it, if u have passion in it!

Yes. I know this person who is earning a six digit a month. he can beat the rate of a CEO. He's a SEO consultant/Manager. For me its importand, I'm a SEO specialist and I'm earning good too. ;)

My boss does this full time, he turned down job offers @ $35 an hour because he wants to make all the money himself. There are it seems very few that are really good at it, how much he can charge depends on how hard the niche is.

Some "targets" as he calls them are harder to hit than others, some are easy (like taking candy from a baby).

I can see how many man hours are required, I don't think he's charging near enough (or else I'd make more money!)

Hi Nikolas, Thank you for posting the link to SEOBook, I'm very new at all of this. I'm a new intern and my boss is constantly saying to learn this, that and everything. There is so much information to mentally absorb, it can be a bit overwhelming. I just spent the last couple of hours reading and watching related videos (by LeFever) through SEOBooks. I learned more in the past few hours than I have in the past 3 weeks. Which is especially useful, as my boss is paying me learn, in addition to working. The info from both SEOBook and the Lefever YOUtube videos, were comfortable and easy to follow and absorb. I now subscribe to both.

My friend is an SEO. she is getting more I do.
She is happy and fulfilled but so much work she is doing...

Well how can anyone start an SEO career? Does he need to work in an SEO company? Or it can be as a freelance?

my wife is starting her SEO career and she feels good, fulfilled and happy of what she is doing. I guess worth it. Happiness and contentment is what I wanted for her that is why hehehe!

I've always thought of SEO expertise as something to gain so you can focus on your online businesses and get paid to share that expertise on the side.

It is worth it but you can't look at is as a great rich quick scheme. It takes a lot of hard work.

I will say that It depends on the your expertise, If you are a good SEO professional then people will ask you to provide them your service but if you are not very good then you need to run behind the clients.

Only if you are part of a team, a company, alone you can compete with others if you have few projects, clients. Some sites have 2 - 5 people working for them day and night.

I dont think about a career, but a good job it is at the moment or later few years. When the competition on the web still exist, the value one SEOer makes still get paid. Special one prediction 2010 in marketing present that the money putting in Social media, PPC, SEO, Video online will increase. Let be happy with that.

I've noticed a number of businesses in SW Florida are interested in SEO, but, with the economic downturn they are apprehensive about any additional expense.  Search engine optimization as an industry seems to be in a constant state of transition ... the latest being a need to incorporate social media management into our strategy.  Small business owners here in Ft Myers seem to view getting their SEO and social media needs handled by one firm as a 2 for the price of 1 deal ...

I am only a newbie on this field. I just find it interesting, though not that money-making. I may only work it in a part-time way.
