Well Cindy first of all welcome aboard,
Hope you like our small place :)
About your question, the advantages/disadvantages are these :
If your directory is a reciprocal one, then it would be easier to promote it, as webmasters that search for sites to submit their urls, are looking for search engine spiderable links. If the links that you provide are not reciprocal, then propably they wont come to your site, except if there is a reason related to direct traffic. For example
topsites directory is not a reciprocal directory, but people submit their sites like crazy because the site sends a lot of visitors to the listings, and the page for each listing has some search engine traffic.
On the other hand a reciprocal directory has the great advantage that can be listed in lists of search engine friendly directories. This alone can send a lot of traffic to your site plus link popularity.
About the non - reciprocal directories, the advantage in general is that sites that back link to you give you a better ranking, as you don't actually give them back a real link.
Well that's all, hope my answer helps you :)
BTW feel free to submit your directory
