Social bookmarks - Let's make a tutorial on that

As the time passes social bookmark sites get more and more attention, and at least for the serious webmasters it is a source of traffic that you can really count on.

Let me explain a little how it works (maybe some of us don't know yet). You create some great piece of content and then submit it to sites like digg, delicious, etc. Those sites have a voting system, and in case that you get many votes your story is linked from the home page of that site.

If you make it to the front page there are many advantages. Here are a few :

  • Instant traffic. One of my sites that got digged, got 20.000 visitors in one day, while another made my server crash(there were 1300 people online before that crash...) :)
  • Link bait. Many bloggers will see your article and this way you'll get even more traffic, exposure and links that will give you top SERP results very fast
  • Syndication. There are many sites that use the feeds from social bookmarking web sites (eg. web 2.0 announcer) and that will give you even more incoming links
  • Subscribers. Traffic from social bookmark sites is not converting so well, but several experiments showed that they can increase your subscribers
  • Branding. Branding is about having too many eyes looking at your logo, and it is really important if you want to create a site that will stand for long time

So I guess it is clear that having your site social bookmarked is a good thing, and definitely is something that a webmaster should work on. I've created this thread so we can share some tips on how to make it on the front page of a social bookmark web site.

Let's start with the basics. In order to have more chances to get mentioned by those sites you need :

  • Unique - high quality - content. Content is a king remember? :)
  • Add some social bookmarking buttons somewhere that they are visible enough. Additionally you can use the addThis buttons which give the user the ability to bookmark your content with any bookmarking service they like

The second one is really simple but the first one (content) is really a very huge task. The purpose is to have content which is "optimized" for social bookmarking web sites. In my experience with such sites, I have learned that the best content to submit is articles like "How to...." or "100 best....." and in general topics that are very amusing or having a tutorial character.

Also something that can help is to constantly read feeds from social bookmarking sites (or checking popurls or web2announcer) in order to see what content goes to the front page of these sites. I believe this is the easiest way to learn what kind of content goes to the front page of social bookmarking sites.

Please be my guest and add some tips or say your opinion on those I wrote here. Hope we can create a thread that will help us get more traffic to our web sites :)

Yeah, you are right... "How to..." and lists are often the top bookmarked sites.

BTW... you made the front page at www.seovoter.com!    HAHA... I know it is still early days, but we are getting there!

I like this article about web 2.0 sites - it explaines each major social bookmarking site and how it can be used to market your website.

I would also add a couple of articles to the mix "How to find Digg Friends and Stumbleupon guides.

For webmasters looking for some sort of workflow try how to obtain 42000 links in a week

That was a nice contribution to the list. Did anyone tried to submit content to all of these at once?

Before a month or so I hired someone to submit a site to 100 social bookmarks, but I can't value the results as the site had already high traffic.

i think submitting to social bookmarking sites is ideal for a new site to start getting visitors.

I'm planning to develop a Social Search... I just dont know where to start yet, but if we here at WD can make this, I think it could be something worthwhile. It's like a search engine, only that the results are based on values summed up from different bookmarking sites with corresponding icon links to their main social bookmark posts. An SE that is user dependent to social bookmarking sites... what do you think?

*or maybe I just had too much coffee today...

I might give it a go and let you know which site provides the most traffic...

@ vbignacio - now you are just missing www.seovoter.com from you list... new and still PR0 though.

That's a great idea, and in my opinion this will be the future of search engines :)

Yeah, If I get some talented people on board, who doesn't require that much at start, (I'll offer bigger shares though)... and give me info on how to get it started, then I might actually look for a VC or get a loan for this to push through...

Nikolas
Tue 12 June 2007, 08:01 am GMT +0200
Maybe we should start a new thread on that. To find VC you first need a business plan

Nah Im imagining something really simple yet really useful, not dependent on links but for value... See everyone gets around social bookmarking technology since some others try to trick the system...
