Starting something in the open source community

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but anyway I could use some help from you :)

During the last months I had made a few open source php classes which I've used mostly to promote the webdigity blog. Before I continue with this post I should say that I really like the open source community - especially because I owe most of my programming experience to it - and I would really love to be more active member of the community in the future.

Recently I realized that parts of some big projects I made in the past (and some that I code now) could be used to create a php framework. I know that there are too many frameworks out there, but I thought that I have nothing to loose especially when I use my own framework for my own projects, and it would be more than great to share this with other programmers and maybe get some more help from them, etc.

In addition I thought that something like that could help webdigity as it would be the official way to get feedback and support for this project :)

So if I finally find some free time I will start to publish a few php classes, and then I can compile them to a framework. I am writing my concept here because it is really important for me to know what my friends here think about it so I would really love to have some feedback. Also I would like to ask you what do you think of that as a web site? In your opinion it would be better to be a part of webdigity or a separate site with a direct linking to webdigity?

i think its a great idea Nikolas, id definately use them :). I say create a new site for it, similair to i suppose what Olaf is doing.. for your own phpClasses :D consider me first user!

I think it's a great idea! If I was as good as a coder as you are, I would post my scripts for OS... I'm just good at modifying things and make it look pretty...

IMHO, having a separate project page that direct links to webdigity is the way to go, and we could just add a subforum for the support as we always do here at webdigity...

be careful with providing a complete framework, why? how bigger your script how bigger the problems / questions from the users (here) :)

I guess a second site with some manual etc. is not wrong, provide the classes as smaller objects because this way its possible to get much more visitors / users, a lot of webmasters can't handle a framework. (btw. I get a presentation of the Zend framework next week)

Speaking of a "framework" I mean a very basic one, which will be able to be used in order to create various modules - projects that will be able to work easily with each other. Of course this is a plan for later. In the beginning I will just publish a few classes.

Yes do it this way, I think I will work a little with the zend framework for a while (is php5 and OOP)

I like this idea Nick,

I suggest you put it in a seperate website that would after some time be self sustained,
( have a wiki where interested parties can leave comments on its usage and modifications)
and its going to be less of a hassle to you
