Storing files out of the root dir

how can i have the files set out of the root directory so users cannot directly access them?

and then how can i display the files on a page?

uploading files to some folder above the root is not a problem if your scripts has the rights to do it.

showing files to the visitor could be done with php code (check the file functions fopen, fget, etc)
