What is best for SEO? Content or links?

My new website is on page 1 for its keyword after about 4 weeks. It made page 2 after 2 weeks. I added new content and posted links.

Could I have achieved page 1 without links? Is content alone enough?

Posting links gets really boring...

It is very rare to go on page 1 of SERPs without quality links pointing to your site. That would mean that your keyword has no competition so it is probably not so good.

Did that keyword gave you any conversions?

It depends on which keyword you are targeting, if the keyword is too competitive, then ranking with that keyword is difficult. If keyword is less competitive then ranking with that keyword is bit easier.

Content on your site and keywords are extremely important but you won't be able to stay on top if you don't use link building. TRying that is a waste of time. I myself tried it for awhile, cause I found it extremely boring, but easysubmits showed me that I can do better if I get backlinks. Slowly my pagerank got better. Now I'm just keeping it up there. :)

If your content is unique and people want to reuse that or link to your site. You get link without linkbuilding efforts. If your content is not really good enough to get the link, you need build back links to get high rank in the search engine for your targeted keywords.

I think both are important.

You can compare content to king and links to queen.

Only a combination of the two aspects can bring a better ranking in SERPs.

I don't think there is any contest between content and links. They are both important, aren't they?

A good site rank is the combined effort of the two. You have to have both quality content and quality links from relevant sites.

Yes... but this needs explanation.

No amount of backlinks will bring a rubbish-content site to the top of serps. (Correct me if I'm wrong!)

But I have a PR3 site on the first page of serps with no backlinks worth mentioning. It is unique niche content.

For SEO purposes both are certainly important, but, for business the object isn't to just rank in search engine results pages, you want to get potential clients to contact you and do business with you.  To that end content is king ... no one is going to pick up the phone and call in response to spamming, keyword stuffing nonsense!

Google prefer good, unique and fresh content on a site. But the problem is that we first have to tell Google that we have updated our content for this we have to post links so that Google may notice these links(Which of course should be from High PR sites) and the crawl your page. both are beneficial for good rank...

Link building and content production go hand in hand.

Consistently creating content  is very important. It must be original. It drives traffic if done properly.

Some articles and content will get more traffic than others, but it is important to crank out as much good content as you can. Link backs will come if are producing good content.

I am completely agree with alicakeys statement and would like to advise you to continue with your link building efforts along with creating quality content for your website as both of them are necessary to attain and maintain good seo rankings for your keywords.

However, if you got bored with posting links here and there I would suggest you to put some efforts on social media marketing. You can get a good amount of traffic from social media websites like stumbleupon, facebook, and twitter etc. But, that will require you to actively interacting with the members, making friends, and engaging the community members to draw traffic towards your website.
