I want to start using PHP and mySQL to help me with my work. Does anyone know if and how I can set up somewhere locally on my computer or something where i can test my pages and database as if it were live on a web server?

I am learning PHP and I'm looking for the simplest way to run practice scripts. I already have netbeans installed.

you are using a Windows based PC, you should download WAMP (Windows Apache MySQL PHP) package. It will install everything for you and create an environment for you to begin learning to develop in.

How do you set it to root? I found the folder on my system easy enough and all it contains is an index.html file. Do I replace this file with the file I am creating?

I found XAMPP to be the easiest to install using some brilliant youtube videos to show how, step by step (nb. you must turn it off to use Skype) and then you will be able to create PHP files that run on your browser no problem.  XAMPP is available from apachefriends.org for pc and mac.

I use NetBeans to create, well everything! but Eclipse is also very popular for PHP - though I've not tried it.

For a brilliant (and funny) tutorial to the concepts of coding in PHP, look for "PHP 101: PHP for the Absolute Beginner" at devzone.zend.com/article/627

Plus, there are loads of project tutorials to follow on youtube to help practice, for example try a user login/logout script to learn loops!

Above all, enjoy!

1. Download XAMPP
2. Enable MySQL and Apache on XAMPP
3. Open the 'htdocs' folder and create a text document inside there
4. Save the text document as a PHP file
5. Edit the PHP file while learning from video tutorials
6. Realise how much there is to learn
