What is the primary goal in your life?

As for me I just wanna live happily. What about you guys?

To be successful.

Well, to just say to live happily really encompasses all goals, unless you are someone who enjoyes suffering.  >:(

One thing to note though is that many of the subgoals do change as one passes through life. Things that were very important when one was 15 are not so important when one is 20, that is, needs and interests are replaced by different ones.

In the end the final goal I guess would be to die a quick painless death with a smile in my face. And even without a smile if you push me, as long as it's quick and painless haha.

Hehe, not a bad goal John. I guess the meaning of life is to be happy and that doesn't mean necessary that you have to be rich. Of course money is welcome :) but in order to be happy you need to be good for other too (hope you understand what I am trying to say here)

Yeah, but there is one thing:

It is just not possible to be happy in life. I mean, happy all the time. There are happy moments, days, even weeks or months, and even then not every second.

Perhaps to have as goal the impossibility of being happy is the first thing that is going to get in the way of achieving that goal.

What do the greek philosophers have to say about that? I'm sure they knew all this stuff back in the days before Christ.

Well, my primary goal in life is make good and well- paid career. After that have family which will love me and include several children, a boy and a girl!

Well before Christ in the ancient greece people believed that - I think Plato said this - that everything in the nature is coming in pairs. So bad is going with good, etc. With that in mind Plato understood that in order to be happy you have not to be :)

What I mean is that you can feel good if you haven't feel bad before, because that would be not feeling at all....

My primary goal in life is to be a successful person to help my family and other unfortunate people. However, we can't reach this goal if don't fail and in order to learn things we need to experience failure and yet we can't be happy if we don't experience sadness. imho!

I know psychologists recommend to make your dreams very detailed - not just I want to be happy, but describe in details what happiness means for you in figures and time periods, say,  5 kids, 200.000 annual income and 5-storey mansion.That's not about me, just as a sample.

Well, this is a broad philosophical question that has been brought up before.

Some comments (that nobody wants to hear !)

People who are successful in their careers don't always take good care of their families because they are too busy, too stressed out. They provide good things to their family, but sometimes cause deep emotional scars in their children because of abandonment. This can cause their children to end up maimed for life, turning to addictions, having problems with relationships etc.

Having as a primary goal to be happy can be quite a source of unhappiness when our expectations aren't met. Of course, depends on what you call being happy. In most cases our aspirations of being happy carry a list of expectations or wish list such as, money, position, prestige, wife (or husband), health, and so on. Since 99% of humanity is competing to achieve this exact same goal, it is highly likely that you won't achieve it, as not everynone can be rich (or there wouldn't be anybody to wait at their tables), and not everyone can have the wonderful spouse they'd like.

Revising your concept of what happiness is can help in achieving it. Some people call happiness the absence of pain, others call happiness simply what you have (as what you have can easily be lost from one day to another -health, your current position, etc.-), others more religious oriented try to do "God's will" whatever it may be, asking only that their God give them the strength to handle it. There are many variations.

To summarize, achieving "happiness" is naturally engrained in human beings, but what is not so natural and healthy is the unrealistic model of happiness that is taught in some societies. And that can really make you unhappy in the long run.
