max number of files in one directory

I have a ODP directory where for all URL's (with listings) a file is cached. At the moment I have there ~ 40.000 files in one folder.

what is the maximum of files a linux server can handle?

I am not sure about the limit but it must be at least 1-2 digits after 40.000 :)

yeah 1 mio. files should not be a problem, I think that most of the cached files are generated by search engines, if the organic traffic will go up (and the earnings) I will create a db based odp version, thanks
