One of the common pieces of advice that SEO types give is that relevant outbound links to quality sites can actually help your own performance in the search engines. The guidelines that I???d recommend in outbound links from a purely SEO perspective are:
a. not too many links (apparently too many outbound links can be frowned upon by SE???s)
b. keep them relevant (link to other sites/pages that are on a similar topic to you)
c. use appropriate keywords as anchor text (the words you use as the link can help both you and the site you???re linking to with SEs)
d. high ranking sites (some SEOs argue that if you link to highly ranking sites for the keywords that you???re after that it will have more impact). :)

Could you please provide a link explaining why outbound links are good? I am a little confused... It sounds like we should all go ahead and add outbound links to google.com , yahoo.com, facebook.com and so on in our sites....

It is definitely a good idea to use out of bound links that is pointing to major sites. This will certainly help your website rank better in the search engine.

outbound link is a link from your website to another website. Outbound links can add value to your site by providing useful information to users without you having to create the content.

Inbound by far I'd say, they hold the most authority because its coming toward you. That's been my experience with outbound and inbound links anyway.

Yup both are good. But always use them when needed. Anchor text must be relevant to content or topic unless you will be supposed as spammer.

Outbound links are a sign of your trust towards to site you are linking to, though bots crawl websites from link to link and evaluate the rankings based upon this pattern therefore when you link to another site bots sees this as a sign of your trust towards that site and will pass on the link value towards that site.
