Which is the best free forum software to install? I have been using phpbb and was wondering if anyone knew of a forum that had more/better features than this one.

I think that I am going to test out this SMF as it seems to have more to start with...

SMF is fine, and I really like that it is easy to mod it yourself.

I used phpBB for some other forums that I made in the recent past, but it is not so good, because it produces big overhead, and it is very unsecure. In three months (that I used it) there were made 3 critical security updates....

I'm running phpBB myself. It has quite a good reputation in the free forum-software part of the world

Yes but I'm still seeking to find a mod to put the topic title in the URL?

Have you ever seen such a mod for phpbb?

SMF is pretty good, it seems to have a lot of available hacks.
I've had some experience with both PhoBB and Invision Power Board (v1.3 is freeeee) and I've reached a conclusion: IPB is better (for me at least), since PHPBB always seems to have security issues. And who doesn't remember the worm for PHPBB...

I don't like phpBB... it is SMF for me.

SMF just released a new version with a much better default skin.

I hate default skins its like using a website template that is already in use on a lot of other sites...

That's true. And in fact there are thousands of begginers that use default themes to start a community. I believe this way you have no chance to success. Even if you use a non default template, you should change it a lot before enstablish your site.

I agree with Nikolas. After all there are thousands of forums out there, so you have to be unique if you want to be competitive

I myself prefer Invision's forums. Invisionfree itself is highly customizable. IPB is even better.
