Yeah it helps in terms of SEO, but it is worst in terms of making a brand. So I guess it depends on the project and how long term goals you have.

remember that Flickr.com ranks well in "photo sharing"

besides, how boring it would be Google.com was SearchEngine.com

branding matters.

Totally agree. The best choice is the short catchy name

keyword as a domain.. it is ok, from my experience, it was good but the keywords that need is more specific. eg niche "cooking". choose  "cooking for kids" or whatever.

I would go with key-phrase domains unless it was some site you were really passionate about.  In other words, if your making the site for a quick buck and quick ranking then get a key-phrase domain.  However, if you wanted some long term project like a webmaster forum then you could choose a brand-able name.

Of course, sometimes a brand-able name will also be a key-phrase name.

if you have a short name or you can abreviate your name, using your name can give your domain  the personal touch.

If you want to register new domain. Select first domain that is important and SEO friendly. Select your domain using keywords.  It helps you to boots up the traffic and visitors.

There is a new Google update called Panda update, it sort of negates the benefit of keyword in a domain name, its one of the hotest topics of discussion in the SEO world at the moment

I think you should put the keyword there without any worry! I always do this and it helped me in ranking. I know that branding is important, but it's very hard to obtain! You can, sometimes, combine both the keyword and the branding if you know the style!

yes, having the keyword on your domain can help your ranking in the search engine. But it is only one of the factor in the SEO so don't solely rely on it.
