Just got this from one of my registrars :

On 7. April live registrations for .EU domains will begin.  Experts are attaching high importance to this new Top Level Domain - in total, 3-4 million registrations are expected. With approximately 500 million inhabitants, Europe's position within the domain industry is becoming as significant as that of the USA.

The number of pre-registrations in the Sunrise period (over 300 000) underlines this prediction and also supports the potential of .EU domains within the domain marketplace.
