Backlinks from top directories are slightly more powerful than those from social bookmarking sites. Though you need both to fair well on search results.

Hmm,,, Directory is good for link building and social bookmarking for traffic...!!
But i personally think article submission covers both part!!!

directory submission as well as article submission and creating links through websites link exchanges were seems to be beneficial

Depends on the PR and quality of the particular directory or social book marking site. Both are good. Choose high PR social book marking sites and for directory submit your links on reputed directories which are human edited.

bookmarking is more better rather than directory.when it comes on getting traffic bookmarking is quite nice helping a little bit to get a backlinks..directory is also good because that is the best way to get a page rank of your site..

According to me, Social Bookmarking is very good in terms of getting back links. Other activities are also there but social bookmarking is a very good way for increasing traffic.

Social bookmarking and Directory submission both are good and both are important for SEO. but Social Bookmarking is best in terms of getting back links.

both  are  good . Directory   submission is  used  for  getting permanent back link, but bookmarking  help  in  getting  indexing  of url.
