One good way to build links is via web 2.0 sites, create blog sites, lenses, post to social bookmarks etc.

I agree.  Link directories are on their way out as far as the search engines are concerned.  You are better off posting and commenting on blogs/sites that are related to your site, which will give you quality backlinks.

Some of the link directories have aquired a bad reputation for being full of spam, and adding your site there can do more harm than good.

Hard work is the best tool. By doing this you may have to try  backlink tracking by following the sites of your competitors you must got many approved backlinks.

You need to track the results of any online marketing campaign. Various off page activities needed to be used to get the backlinks, dont ever be stuck at single activity to get the backlink for a site. Make sure to use different off page activities like Blog commenting, forum posting, article submission, directory submission, Press release, etc.

I like to say you must have to post on forums and blogs................ but also on the other hand you may submit articles on different articles websites......... I think it is a best way of link building.......

All Off page optimization techniques are helpful for link building. Don't know about tools.

I like to go for manual link building like forum posting, social bookmarking, directory submission, blog commenting etc.
