I did not use this site to much. Just made a profile and added some friends. Still I hear that it is a great way to advertise your products there. Any success campaign on that site? What did you do?
It is same like facebook ads you have to place the bid's for your ads. Check this below url. linkedin.com/advertising

If you are only looking for brand recognition for your ads on Linkedin, then the best way would be to join groups and post articles.
If you are looking for sales leads, the best way is to have your sales team create Linkedin accounts and have everyone they know to join their network. From that network of friends, you can then throw your sales pitch to people within their networks by using your friends as the medium.
Linkedin is very much business to business, so if you are trying to sell a product to your average consumer... you are best to look elsewhere.
What a dork

Linked In is good for Niche Market. Thus, don't expect it to bring too much traffic on your website.
Now, the thing you were asking - there are two ways to promote your website on LinkedIn:
1. Create an attractive profile on Linked In, with the link of your website on it. (Build connections to ensure more traffic through this way)
2. You can write original, and useful, articles (and can either write an article related to your website, or place a link of your website in that article or can expect people to come and check your profile).

LinkedIn is a powerful social networking site that can help you build and maintain your professional network. This LinkedIn how to guide will show you how to set up your LinkedIn profile, build your network by finding connections and making contacts, find and join LinkedIn groups, and search for and find business and job opportunity leads. LinkedIn is arguably the most professional and business-oriented of the popular social media sites, but it's not just for job seekers or for making connections. just make sure that: 1.Keep your Status up to date 2.Ask for recommendations 3.Join Groups that Relate to Your Profession

in my point of view, If you are going to work over your linkedin profile, why not consider other social sites and networks like Facebook, Google + etc. If you use all of them in collective manner, definitely you will get more visibility !!

I think facebook is on top for web site promotion because of millions of active users and seo friendly features.
