From my experience it doesn't matter how ugly your website looks (unless you are selling something) as long as the content is there that is what people want. You could have a pretty website but if you write something that I and most people will glaze over than it won't matter how attractive your site looks.

I still go to geocity pages because I am digging for content.

Most people don't realize that and try to ram their poor crappy content in my face with advertising.  Undecided

I THINK YOU SHOULD MAKE YOUR WEBSITE CONTENT ATTRACTIVE FOR YOUR VISITORS ,QUALITY CONTENT WILL ATTRACT YOUR VISITORS TO COME AGAIN AND AGAIN ON YOUR WEBSITE ,I THINK MOSTLY PEOPLE WILL AGREE ON THIS POINT THAT LOOKS ARE NOT IMPORTANT THEN YOUR WEBSITE MATERIAL(CONTENT).

It doesnt matter if you make a good website. A simple site is enough. You have to make a good content as some people mention here.

Some people judge a website by its looks. My website has nice soothing coloured borders (yellow). It gives off a nice aura
