I usually see in sites a paypal "donate" button, which gives the abillity to the visitors to donate some money to the site as an indication that they like the site.

I think that this is cool, but I wonder if people actually donate to sites?

Have you ever used this thing as a way of monetization? Did it worked?

It probably will depend on the type of site you have. If you are offerring something to the visitors that they would have to pay for elsewhere or have had to work hard for, then they may donate some money to you.

But I believe that donations should not be considered as a way of monetization. At the most it may be an option to recover expenses.

I would donate to a site (especially a forum) that gives me that.

Eh, it would depend. My host does it and made a special usergroup for the people who have donated. He also lists the top five donators to the site. I think the highest amount is $20 though. It all depends on your members I guess.

I tried a donations page, and the only one to donate so far is me! People don't like giving away money unless they have to...

I have a donate feature on my board, we make it so that they get there own special section, a cool blue name, and a special user title. We have had quite a lot of success with it so far!

It is not really donation in the right sense of the word. You have actually been able to sell advertising spots without the advertisers knowing. Smiley
