Well my website is near complete. Now I am intrested in getting the name out there. Have any of you used google adwords to promote your website? And if you have did you have any luck?

I have never used adwords, because I think that it is the most expensive way to promote a site.
Of course if you investigate the keywords that you may use there could be great results, but I can't really advice you as I have no real experience with adwords (last campaign I made with them was about 3-4 years).

One of my clients spends US$200 a day! He says that he definitely feels the reduction in work and activities on his site when he reduces his daily limit. I know that this is the one extreme, but I wanted to point out that it all depends on how much you want to spend and what sort of return you will get for this advertising. I think that to start with you could spend some on adwords, but you should concentrate on listing your site in search engines and directories. Let us know when it is up!

Why would you pay for it? You can get linked to by affiliating with sites and posting your link in link directories for free... Well for the most part.

That's true, but you can't have fast results with free advertising methods. So if you have some money is allways good to spend it in advertising and create some activity to your site.

I think it makes a big difference when your whole business is run through your website and when it is international too.

Are you kidding? I got from a 0 to a 4 almost completely through directories, and freely as well. I had fast results; that was maybe a week or two's worth of submissions. All in all, my payment amount was... $0.

Mercury this discussion is not about pagerank, and believe me pagerank 4 is not a big deal. Google sends you real traffic after pagerank 5-6 or even more for sites with not much content.
Free ad methods are a great way to promote a site, but in order to give a real boost to a website you must give some bucks too.

I agree... my client has a PR 5 on almost every main page, but he continues to use adwords in a big way. To start off he also used adwords too. If I remember correctly, he submitted to many directories too, paid and free ones.
I think that you have to use all mediums when trying to get your name out there, don't just pick one. Use them all!

I'm using adwords alongside being active in a number of forums (with sig) and building relative link exchanges etc...
My adwords campaign budget is a small $2 per day and is focussed on a very small and targetted niche. The small adsense revenue i'm making i'm covering those costs and receiving CTRs around the 30% mark.
If only Google would let me directly link my adsense / adwords revenues it'd save us both a lot of hassles.

I have always wondered why they haven't linked the two...

back to topic... I use adwords for customers and for myself to get found on keywords which are not inluded on the sites I created. Or just for websites with a lot of flash elements. I pay max 0,30 cents (euro) for a click, otherwise it becomes to expensive. You have to know that adwords is only an extra to get visitors, first you have to optimize your site.
Google adwords is cheaper then regular banner campaigns on high traffic website. If your product is some computer hardware than its maybe not attractive to use adwords. I should say ask Nikolas for a voucher and try to play with a small daily budget.

I used adwords for one of my Swedish websites. When my startup amount was spent and I filled the account with paid money I got a lot worse results. I still got the same amount of clicks, but almost no purchases.
Instead of using adwords I would setup an affiliate program and pay for performance instead.

To do this you need vistors first, adwords customer starts with zero visitors (most of the time)
