So pretty much to get it up get more incoming links? I always thought taht adding to a directory was pointless because they are so large and my site will be near the bottom. But I guess web crawlers/spiders will find them still.

Yes I think the main reason to submit to web directories is to help with SEO, it is usually pretty rare that you will get visitors from the web directories you submit to.

Directories do not give you a significant ammount of traffic, but it is like a residual traffic. My directory gets about 100 - 150 visitors per month from directories, and even it is not much, it will keep going forever. So it is good to submit to directories besides the SEO.
About directory submitions, I think it's the best to do. I submit my sites to new directories almost every day, and the results are very good (not as good from other link sources, but still they count)

Yes but the most of directories request you to link them back. This way your PR isn't raised because the 3 way linking doesn't happen. (This is something i read in another topic here... correct me if i am wrong)

yes you're right, but if you submit your site to new directories they are most of the time free...
If i understand well, submiting your url to directorys that request link back does not help you with PR. Only for some visitors. Is that right?
This is what I say a new directory needs fresh links they can't wait for reprocial links (only). often its possible to suggest 3 way link trades to just try it...

Suggesting a 3 way link exchange is allways good for both parties. I accept 3 way links in the topsites directory for that reason. On the other hand reciprocal links help especcially for directories that have a lot of traffic. Those directories are not so many, but of course they deserve a link back for some extra traffic

That depends with the niche. In most cases niche directories that are also portals of some kind can send you some traffic.
A general directory that can send you some traffic is mine, as all of the links are indexed by google and some times get many traffic. For instance we had a site that got 700 uniques per month from topsites alone.
