I want to use a particular font on my website. This font will probably not be available on the client PC. Can I ensure that the font gets downloaded automatically to the browser and used when my site is displayed?

Yes you can.

There is a Microsoft's tool that do this job, but it works only on IE.

It is called WEFT (Web Embedding Fonts Tool)

Nikolas is right, although I still advise you to use standard fonts to guarantee cross-browser compatibility...
