To 'buy' express inclusion with my post credits, do I submit to the directory and then make the purchase in the shop? Or do I make the purchase through the shop and it then takes me to the sign up?

Thank you for asking that. We had several problems from this.

You should first submit to the directory, and then use the forum shop's product.

I submitted my site and then came here and bought the express submission.

I received 3 emails thanking me for my submission. I could understand that generating 2 messages, but 3?

Hope I didn't do something wrong.

p.s. You don't tell folks how many characters they can use in the description. That would be helpful; I have some funky listings at places where they chopped off half of my description.

No need to apologize about extra email, just thought you should know.

As to when to buy the express service and when to submit to the directory; maybe add to the express service in the shop a slightly different description, "After submitting your website to the Topsites Directory, get your site reviewed without waiting in the queue." or something like that.
