It's time to use PHP5!

« on: Apr 21, 2006, 01:05:46 PM »

13 Apr 2006

In less than a week from the general launch .eu has approximately 1.5 million domain names registered. This is in addition to all the applications made during the Sunrise phase which still await validation before they are activated.

This makes .eu the 4th largest top level domain in Europe after Germany (.de), UK (.uk) and the Netherlands (.nl).

To realise this feat, EURid has been cooperating with more than 1 000 accredited registrars based in Europe and the rest of the world.

Since launching .eu all member states have shown considerable interest with the following 4 countries leading the pack: (as of 14:37 this afternoon).

Germany                      474 835 .eu registrations
United Kingdom           297 323 .eu registrations
The Netherlands          176 514 .eu registrations
Italy                             88 675 .eu registrations

this is interesting too:

Prediction: .EU extension Will Succeed (31.03.2006)

The sunrise period for .eu domins is nearing its end and the landrush begins April 7th, 2006. See what sedo predicts for the .eu extension.

The sunrise period for .eu domains is nearing its end, the landrush begins on April 7th, 2006. Since last December trademark holders were able to register their domains with the .eu extension, but starting April 7, registration will be open to EVERYONE. Sedo has been readily preparing to welcome .eu domains to their aftermarket the day the landrush begins. Not only will .eu domains be available for resale on April 7th but Sedo members will also be able to park their.eu domains with Sedo’s premium parking program. Sedo.com, the world’s largest domain marketplace, predicts that fifty percent of the .eu domains registered during the landrush will be available for resale.

This prediction is based on comparisons of other Top Level Domains (TLD) such as .info, .biz, and .name, which have been introduced in the last few years. Another indicator of the success of the .eu secondary market is the number of .eu domains already listed for sale on Sedo which were registered in the Sunrise period by trademark owners. More than 21,000 .eu Domains are currently registered from the Sunrise phase. Of those, 3,000 are already in use, either with full content or being used as an email address.

Sedo expects that generic .eu domain names will reach high values, perhaps in the same range as .com and .net domains. Experts from across the domain industry believe that domains with the highest worth will be .eu domains in English, German, and French. The uncertainty lies in whether or not the true value of the names will be seen immediately or after several years on the market.

Even though the registry is opening up to the public there are still some minimum requirements for obtaining a .eu domain. The person or organization registering a .eu domain must have some interest in the European Union, having a registered office, established organization, or be a resident of the EU. Nonetheless, many domainers in the US are expected to invest in this TLD. Sedo, being the only global domain marketplace and having a major presence in the European market is excited about this landrush. Sedo brings together domain buyers and sellers from all around the world. Just as they are the defacto market for all other TLDs they are sure to be the marketplace for .eu domains as well.

Interesting information Olaf.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

Now I guess we have to wait to see if the .eu domain extension will become mainstream as the .com and .net

I know that this thread is old, but I have a quesiton about .eu.  Do you think that it would be beneficial to purchase a .eu that is the same as a .com and have it redirect so I could get a larger European group of people to my sites?  Or do you think that it would be a waste and that I really shouldn't waste my money on it?  Thanks.

My personal opinion is that it would be a waste of money. The only reason to buy a .eu domain is to keep it for the future, as it will be propably a good property in some years.
