if anyone is just starting out on the web and looking for free web hosting for their new sites, i recommend Freewebs.com and 50webs.com since ive been using them for quite sometime now and they have already proven their reliability to me. one important feature in choosing a free web host is they dont place their ads on your pages so you can display your own, particularly Adsense ads, which is a good way to make money out of your work.

I'm a little surprised, it's possible to host for 15-20 USD a year (incl. Domain name) why hosting on a free host? Until now each setup from a website takes more time than with a regular host.

What is you have a free webhosted website and getting inbound links and you have to move to another host do you gonna change al this links? A real domain is much more flexible. Free hosting is for beginners without aa idea what they do on the internet (it's nothing personal)

If you earn 10 USD a month than its time to get a real host (you can pay the hosting from your earnings)

"I'm a little surprised, it's possible to host for 15-20 USD a year (incl. Domain name) why hosting on a free host?"

yes, its cheap for you. but to me living in a 3rd world country like the Philippines, $20 is already Php 1000.00. besides, its difficult to pay in dollars here since it is scarce and the government restricts it.

"Until now each setup from a website takes more time than with a regular host."

not really. i can have a website on a free webhost up and running in just 3 minutes.

"What is you have a free webhosted website and getting inbound links and you have to move to another host do you gonna change al this links?"

assuming you have your own domain, most free webhosts also offer domain hosting as part of their service. on the other hand, if you dont own a domain and you have to transfer to another host, just redirect the traffic to your new host.

"Free hosting is for beginners without aa idea what they do on the internet (it's nothing personal)"

thats whom this thread is for, the beginners...

I understand that there are a lot of people looking for free services, but my experience is that using free hosting is often more work then profit...

i started making websites back then only as a hobby so i use a free webhost. i now have 17 info sites hosted on free servers earning almost $200 monthly with Adsense ads with no monthly hosting bills to pay.

The biggest problem with the free hosts is that if you decide to move, you can't as you are hosted under their domain name.

At least you should have your own domain with a hosting company (free or not free)

yes Nik, ideally you should. but if otherwise, and you have to transfer to another host, just redirect the traffic from the old host to your new one.

yes olaf, thank you for reminding me. search engines dont like meta-refresh and javascript redirects. a manual redirect like this ok:

We have moved to a better & faster server. Please click here to go there.

for seo purposes, it is also better to still optimise it for your keywords by writing a little content about your new site.

vbignacio,

the way is to use redirects by apache with mod_rewrite or RedirectPermanent only thsi redirects gives the right headers back to the searchbot...

heres another FREE host i found that is also very reliable, and their support is topnotch. they call themselves FreeHostia.com and they offer domain and subdomain hosting, email, php, database, ftp, etc. just like in a paid host. data storage is 250 MB and monthly bandwidth is at 5 Gig.

as always, i've tried and tested them already and i wouldn't post it here if they are not OK!

these guys are not really cheap:
Xtra      $ 9.95/mo
# 10,000 MB disk space
# 120 GB bandwidth
# 10 domains hosted
# FREE domain name

check dreamhost.com (the same price and a much better package and if you use a promo code its much cheaper the first year)
