Cheesy sendmail is a linux program...

your point?

he is telling something thats wrong, a lot of free provider disable the php "mail" function because this is often used by spammers.

anyway it could be still possible to send mail via the sendmail application using some other php mailer script (like phpmailer)

I know his point: he is busy with the advertising  for his free web hosting service Cheesy

Another free hosting site is Frihost.

I used them for about a year, but recently they've been having some connectivity issues.  Not sure if it's been cleared up.

In exchange for being active on the message boards (posting ~3-4 times a week), you get free webhosting, php and mysql, 250mb space, and something like 10gb of traffic.

If the connectivity issues have been cleared up, it's a great site.  I used it to play around and learn php/mysql for a year, but now I just plopped down the whopping $5/month for a webhost.  Thankfully they're not so expensive anymore =)

I find it deceiving that they use the word "free" when the right name for it should be "barter hosting" or "trade hosting" or "ad-funded hosting". But, as strange as it might sound, the world doesn't revolve around me , so the so called free hosting will remain "free hosting". Too many people in the hosting industry use this term and too many regular people look for "free hosting" for it to go away.

If you want to experiment with a website or maybe try learning everything there is to know before spending money, free hosting services are an acceptable option. On the other hand, if you are serious about having your own site and want a truly stable experience and robust solution, paid hosting is the only sensible alternative.

in my case, i just match what budget the client can afford. since some allot just $10 a year for their domain and hosting, it would do. now if they dont want downtimes, they have to shell out more.

Since you revived this threat I reviewed the above listed free web hosts for the latest updates:

http://www.memebot.com/ is very limited to 20MB web space and 100MB Traffic. After that they charge you.
http://moved.in offers free CPanel hosting with 150 MB of space, 5000 MB bandwith and 24/7 FTP access (Invite ONLY!)
http://www.brinkster.com/hosting/FreePersonal.aspx offer 15MB free web space only - No Ads no Banners though
http://hostrave.com/ is dead in the water
http://atspace.com/ another dead body
http://www.netfreehost.com/ fine host wit 50MB webspace and 5 gig traffic - No ads No Banners
http://5gigs.com/ is dead in the water
http://www.zeeblo.com/ another victim of commerce - RIP
http://FreePgs.com - Shutdown - This Service is No Longer Available
http://www.frihost.com/ Nice! 250 MB Web Space 10 gigs Traffic Unlimited parked and addon domains Unlimited MySQL databases  !!!
http://www.000webhost.com/ Now that's sweet: 250 MB Space,100 Gig Traffic and CPanel with FANTASTICO included!

A nice list of free web hosting is here: http://www.free-webhosts.com/free-php-webhosting.php

Apart from the fact that 'free' hosting is free, what are the other advantages? Would I be in serious trouble if I took free hosting. I am experimenting with a website I am building now. I am subscribed with Hostgator but I think it's too expensive since I am not really functional yet.
