What is the best way to promote a directory? I just built a new one and it's sitting there with 4 links in it. What are some solid strategies for getting people to submit links?

Well first thing first.

To start you need submissions (this will be a problem later, but that's ok Smiley ) I would recommed to signup to every webmaster forum, and find a place to post your directory without spamming the forum (actually there is allways a "post your directory" thread in every webmaster forum).

This is just the start. You will need tons of links back to your site, as the main thing that can promote a directory site is the pagerank it has. So spend at least 30 minutes per day (I mean for the beginning) to submit your site to other directories. Later people will love to add a link back to you for a faster response.

Another thing you can do, is submitting other sites to your directory(prefer quallity sites), and then contact the webmasters to ask them for a link back.

last but very important is to submit your site to the "directories of directories". There are not so many but they can give you some stable traffic. An example is isedb.com, but don't submit your site there untill it has xxx-xxxx number of links.

Well that's all, hope that helps, and good luck with your new directory Smiley

Also, submit your sites to as many directories as you can.  I have gotten a lot of traffic to my directories by having my links in other directories.

I hate to refer you to another forum, but DigitalPoint has a very active directory area where they allow for solicitations and offers. It is free to post and based on the results of others, the general directories quickly get several hundred submissions from just there. Niche ones seem to do well too.

It is also a great place to find other directories to post your site.

Assuming your directory is SEO friendly, try to get listed with info.vilesilencer.com and some of the other directory of directories sites.
