I just started my first directory. I tossed around with the idea of finding a free directory script, but in the end went with a $25 version of php link directory. I'm not sure if it was worth the money yet or not. It is very easy to use, but still has a few bugs.
The advantage to buying a script from them vs building your own is that you can get tech support from the people who built it and from people who have had similar problems.

Buying a good script is a good choice, but if you want my honest opinion having a custom script that none else has is allways the best, or at least modifing a lot a script that allready exists.

yes, there are so much directories that looks the same becasue they are based on the same open source script...
@kirby145 PHP is so powerfull because its very easy to learn, the only thing you need is book or some tutorials and of course a program (notepad or something)

I have been playing with a freebie, scaled down version of one of these scripts (will probably be buying the full version to get the features I want). The pages are all driven by an extensive CSS file. Your comments that all of the directories from these scripts is something that I have noticed while doing directory submissions. But, I can't help but also think of CSS Zen Garden where the pages are so very different from each other and the only thing changing is the CSS file. My plan for my new site is to make my site look at least somewhat different using my CSS skills.
I guess like most things on the net, it depends on how much time and effort one is willing to spend and whether or not they care if they actually offer something of value to visitors.

I concur with Nick, I have more control with the directory that I built and I would say custom built is better! You would probably need your own server though!
