Yes, this is one option if you have access to the server cofiguration, but it's also a nasty one. Another option colud be to protect one php file with access_user and then include the html files if needed.

But first it is important to know what you like to do, to help you what is the best solution...

I have a school website @ http://www.hcscolby.org/  I put a link on the site to go the a private administration site so authorized users
could get access the Open Administration for School.  Which has a admin site a teacdher site and a parent site. which are at the following links.
https://hcsa.hcscolby.org, https://hcst.hcscolby.org, https:://hcsp.hcscolby.org and I have a 4th site http://elearning@hcscolby.org  I
only want authorized users to have access to these sites.  I wanted to have the link for the administration site log users in to a page and then they could pick the site they have access to.  Maybe I am trying to make this to compicated.

I think this is more a job for apache since its not important to protect the pages but the whole (sub)domain.

check the net about "protect files / folders with .htaccess", but the configuration you need is not basic, so we will see you again ;-)
