but what if I need to to upload a csv to my server and wnat to parse the values to a database (via password protected page)?

I can't see why I need Curl for this... and when do I need a curl upload to upload an image to a directory?

Curl helps dramatically when you want to use sessions, plus it is much faster than anything else.

Also it gives you the capabillity to be a little more secure in your queries.

For example you can use a custom referer or browser header when you connect with your remote scripts.

but this is for uploading files other then the one where the upload form is hosted right?

OK, and for all "local" file actions I have to use the common php functions...

I think I got this now, that why you have all this header information in your curl session, otherwise its not safe for the remote server (where the file is send to)
