I was just reading an article about the top 5 alternative search engines Visit through proxy. The article is pointing that google has the 50% of search results, so I wonder should we start optimizing our sites for the rest engines too?

Here is the list of the top alternative search engines :

  • Ask
  • Gigablast
  • Factbites
  • Exalead
  • Snap

BTW did you know that if you add a &raw=9 in the end of a query in gigablast it will return an xml feed with the search results? here is an example Visit through proxy. I think this can be usefull for people with MFA sites.

i have not heard of any of those engines.. who are they "top alternative" engies? what about infoseek, dogpile, etc.. i thought those were much more popular

on an unrelated note, do you think google will ever NOT control the search market? i mean they came out after Yahoo and msn i believe, how did they take so much control?

I think Ask is interesting, they joint with another big engine or not? I don't give a chance to gigablast...

@method, infoseel and dogpile are older but also not importnat just like altavista.com

By the way I don't believe the 50 % market share of google, I think that pages like digg and delicio.us have a future....

By the way what's wrong with eurekster? these days I checked their blog site, since june no news...

Altavista was once one of the leaders (It was my fave back in 98....)

In my opinion the best search engine in the world could be created by stumbleupon. If they use all the vote data that they have with a good search algorithm they can really beat google (think that they have more than 1 million members that vote for sites every day....)

That's what I say community powered search will be the next generation...

i want a search engine with no crap results.. usually, if u go deeper than page 5+ you are looking @ nothing but junk

yes thats often true, but maybe is the reason that there are no more sites...
