curious as to how everyone here comes up with their "master list" of keywords for their sites.. also, do you compare your list to other lists for related sites.. do you use some type of keyword generator?

Just think about how you want people to find you thru the search engines, for which search terms do you want high ranking? That are your keywords right there. I never used any sort of keyword generator, I do use notepad: I write down all words that I think are somehow related to my site. This list is then ordered by importance and the top few words in the list may be used some more in my website. But usually I only use the wordlist to think about how to label incomming links, not to controll my sites content...

In my opinion the best thing to do first, is to check your competitor. As they have more experience, they propably have something better from what you think at the beginning.

A tool that I use in the process of finding keywords is nichebot. You can find simmilar keywords to those you enter, and it really helps.

BTW I think that some times webmasters don't really know what they want. For example I worked to list this site under "webmaster forums", and now I see that  the 90% of the members that come from search engines using this query are spammers, or people who are looking for webmaster forums to sell their sites....
