What modifications, tweaks and settings would you recommend for someone just setting up an SMF forum? what's the best way to give your forum the best SEO?

Well you should start by removing the SESSIDs from urls. I think I have posted the way to do that, but if I didn't let me know Smiley

Then you can use the archive script Visit through proxy which will help search engines to 'understand' your content better.

Another small thing that comes to my mind, is to replace the links to index.php to /
