check browser type and others

as we all know, some effects that work in IE do not work in firefox, and others.. in my case, i would like to write a simple if/else statement to check whether a users browser is : IE5+,6+, Firefox, or Mac browsers.. any idea how this would work? so it would be *something * like ..
