Hi, I found your script through much searching in regards to referral spam.

I don't run a blog, I have a forum that is being hit by this stuff.

I dont' know anything about htaccess, but have been doing a ton of research on this stuff.

I would like to know what types of referals you have in your database, and how new ones get added to this database?

I have been  blocking by IP address, but don't wish to block anyone that needs to get to my forum since it is a medical forum.

Any advice and help in regards to installation would be so appreciated.

thanks in advance, and thanks for the battle that you are fighting in this area.

First of all, welcome to our forum Smiley

Here are some answers to your questions :

The ip blocking is not too good for referal spamming, because there are some serious spammers out there the use worms to spam (they spam by using illegal access to other's people pcs). I found out that, because the first big ref spam I got to my site was from about 250 ip adresses that were in different subnets and countries....

The database is been updated by people that contribute to this script, but I only add spammers if I can have a proof(access to the spammed's site statistics), but you can allways put custom domains in the script. You can change the line :

Code:
$custom_spammers = array();

by something like this :

Code:
$custom_spammers = array("domain1.com", "domain2.net");

About the script, you won't need any advice, as it will do all the job without any customization needed. But even if you face any problem, just post here and we will help you solve it.

The only recommendation is not to change anything to your .htaccess file after the job done, especially the comment lines (#aStatSpam)

Hi, thanks for the welcome.

I wouldn't say I am as bombarded as seriously as you mentioned.

my bandwidth is usually about 2-300mb a month. Highest it has reached was 5+gb. Which is how I had suspected something was going on.

I have a ton of IP's blocked, but realize that they might not all be the spammers, I have the names of the spammers and their supposed url's in a word file. I have to organize them yet.

I have seen several ways of blocking, which is why I am checking your script out. I am not familiar with htaccess at all, and don't feel like killing my site. Yes, I know to back up, but things tend to happen to me. Even with backups.  Embarrassed

I also think that two people that joined about the time this started were responisble for this starting. Through the IP view that I have I noticed that their IP's posting were different from what was showing up in my stats on their posts, if this makes any sense.

I even had someone trying to access my site with frontpage. I didn't realize that fp was enabled so I quickly disabled it. They tried with frontpage and a ms word program to get into the site. Also blocked their IP's as well.

Sad thing is, my forum is there for helping others who are diagnoised with fibromyalgia and related things. It angers me that there are people out there who just don't care.  Cry

Don't worry my friend, just execute the script and then the only thing that you should worry about is checking your stats for 'fake' referers and add them to the script.
