There's no rush, but maybe look back at the beginning when your forum first started.
Well I don't think the topic is what makes the forum good, but the feeling of the whole forum.
For instance here at webdigity we are more like a familly (or at least I think so....) The loyal members of this community care for each other, and really like to help each other.
I believe that feeling is making people stay attached to this community, not the topics or the graphics or anything else....

I think the better ones are the ones that start by asking a question/opinion and turn into a water-cooler type conversation with opinions and ideas being exchanged along with a few private jokes between members.
Not sure there is any sort of recipe to use to purposefully create these thread - I tend to think they just happen.

I had a topic called 'What are you listening to right now?" and that went on for about a year! Another one i saw on a rival forum was count to 1000, that went on for a while but i dont know if it was finished If you get something rolling you could split the posts into different topics when the conversation get going.

I think it depends on your website and if there are several types of categories or just one to focus on. For my website, I only focus on baseball (sports) cards so it makes no sense to bring up other topics, at least until more members are there and maybe general sports talk seems fit as well.

The problem with those topics that go on forever is that you can't read them all. Then people just read the first page or two and post. I'm not sure that's very engaging or providing much use. My first question back is "What's the purpose of your forum?" Topics that spur on intelligent discussion in the spirit of the purpose of the forum are your best topics.
